Bordesholm is a small town in Schleswig-Holstein, and its municipal emergency money issues of 1921 fall squarely within the first wave of German Kleingeldersatz — the small-change substitutes that flooded local economies as coin metal was hoarded and official currency failed to keep pace with postwar demand. Aug. Westphalen in Flensburg was a regional printer serving numerous Schleswig-Holstein municipalities during this period, which accounts for a certain consistency in paper quality and typographic execution across notes from different issuers in the same district.
