Oberammergau's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the peak years of German municipal emergency currency, when hundreds of towns produced locally printed scrip to address coin shortages. Oberammergau was unusual in having a ready-made tourist identity — the Passion Play village had been drawing international visitors since 1634, and the 1922 Passion Play cycle was already being planned when this note circulated.
The municipality leaned heavily on that identity in its Notgeld program, making these notes collectible from the outset rather than purely functional. Many were sold directly to visitors as souvenirs, which is why surviving examples often show no circulation wear whatsoever.
