Erkelenz issued this 75 Pfennig note as Notgeld during the hyperinflationary pressures of the early Weimar Republic, when municipal and civic bodies across Germany were forced to produce emergency small-denomination currency to compensate for chronic coin shortages. The Reichsbank simply could not keep pace with demand for low-value circulating money, and hundreds of towns stepped into the gap.
The DeNG reference places this within a numbered series, suggesting Erkelenz issued multiple Notgeld types in this period — the "1/2#348.1a-6/6" suffix indicates this is the sixth note of a six-piece set, the kind of deliberately collectible series that became commercially common by 1921 as municipalities recognized a secondary market among Notgeld collectors.
