Meiningen's 1921 notgeld series was among the more self-consciously artistic to emerge from Thuringia, a region that produced an extraordinary volume of collector-targeted emergency currency during the hyperinflation years. The city leaned into its identity as a former ducal residence and cultural center — home to the Meiningen Court Theatre and the famous Meininger Herzöge who reformed staging across Europe in the 19th century — commissioning local or regional designers rather than recycling generic plate work.
Franz Scheiner in Würzburg was a competent regional printer but not one of the prestige houses. The designer credit to Gg. Lilie is specific enough to suggest a commissioned local artist rather than an in-house studio attribution.
