Hameln's 1921 notgeld series leaned hard into the Pied Piper legend — the city had been commercially exploiting that mythology since the late 19th century, and the inflation-era small-change shortage gave local authorities a convenient excuse to print tourist-friendly collectibles alongside functional currency. Many notgeld issues from this period were deliberately produced in excess of genuine circulation needs, sold directly to collectors, and never intended to wear out in anyone's pocket.
Appelhans in Braunschweig handled a considerable volume of municipal notgeld work across Lower Saxony during 1920–1922, and the printing quality here reflects that volume production.
