Comments

Pfaffendorf sat directly across the Rhine from Koblenz, connected by ferry and later bridge, but administered separately — a distinction that gave the municipality its own notgeld-issuing authority during the postwar small-change crisis of 1920–21. Schaar & Dathe in Trier were prolific printers of Rhineland notgeld during this period, handling commissions from dozens of small municipalities that the major German printing houses had neither interest in nor capacity for.

The Rauland designer credit is the sole surviving trace of whoever executed this particular commission.
