Arys was a small East Prussian railway town — its importance came almost entirely from the junction connecting lines toward Lyck, Johannisburg, and the Russian frontier. The 1921 notgeld issue reflects the postwar currency chaos that forced hundreds of German municipalities to print their own emergency small change, with Flemming & Wiskott in Glogau handling an enormous volume of such commissions across the region during this period.
