The central vignette, executed in fine letterpress line engraving, illustrates the interior of an old German tavern room ('Altdeutsche Stube im Goldnen Löwen') with a rotund innkeeper seated at a table surrounded by tankards, ceramics and furnishings. Flanking the main scene are two upright panels each depicting a historic guild ceremonial stein — the clothmakers' Humpen of 1798 on the left and the cobblers' Humpen of 1745 on the right — while a Low German quatrain verse in cursive script occupies the lower centre panel. |
