Gnarrenburg is a small municipality in the Teufelsmoor peatlands southeast of Bremen, and this 75 Pfennig note is pure Notgeld — local emergency scrip issued during the hyperinflationary spiral that made Reichsbank coin and small-denomination notes functionally useless in everyday trade. Gebrüder Jänecke of Hannover was a prolific printer of exactly this kind of municipal scrip in 1921, producing runs for dozens of Lower Saxon communities simultaneously.
The signatories Liedweg and Schriefer Holljnb almost certainly represent local municipal officials rather than any banking authority — standard for Gemeinde-issued Notgeld, where civic administrators rather than financiers held signing responsibility.
