Weddersleben is a tiny village in the Harz foothills, and its 1921 notgeld issue reflects exactly that scale — small-run municipal scrip produced during the inflationary chaos following Germany's defeat in the First World War, when coin shortages forced thousands of local authorities, however obscure, to print their own fractional currency. Oscar Grupe was a Quedlinburg-based printer who handled notgeld commissions for multiple Harz-region municipalities during this period, which means die and plate work was often shared or adapted across issues.
The single signatory, Rinkleben, almost certainly served as Bürgermeister or municipal treasurer — the office rather than the individual validated the note legally.
