| Opmerkingen |
The karbovanets coupons were introduced not as a currency but as a rationing instrument — ration coupons to supplement the Soviet ruble when consumer goods shortages became acute. By 1991, with Ukraine moving toward independence and the ruble effectively collapsing in purchasing power, these coupons were pressed into service as a parallel currency almost by accident. The 75 karbovantsiv denomination is one of the higher values in the coupon series, reflecting how quickly inflation had outpaced the original rationing arithmetic.
Ukraine formally replaced the karbovanets coupons with the hryvnia in 1996, but the interim currency they evolved into — the karbovanets — had already suffered hyperinflation that ultimately pushed denominations into the hundreds of thousands.
