Spitz an der Donau issued this 75 Heller notgeld in 1920 as part of Austria's postwar emergency currency wave, when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipal governments scrambling to cover small-denomination shortfalls that the new Austrian state could not adequately supply. Eduard Sieger in Vienna handled a significant volume of these regional issues, and the print quality tends to be noticeably sharper than notgeld produced by smaller provincial printers.
The Wachau series from this district is among the more methodically documented of the Austrian notgeld groups, which makes attribution straightforward — the Jaksc cataloguing for this region is unusually reliable.
