Schwaz, in the Tyrolean Inn Valley, had been one of the wealthiest mining towns in Europe during the sixteenth century — its silver mines briefly made it the second-largest German-speaking city after Vienna. By 1920, it was issuing 75-Heller Notgeld to cover a shortage of small change that the Vienna mint simply could not address, a problem endemic across Austrian municipalities in the immediate postwar years.
Wagner in Innsbruck handled a large share of Tyrolean municipal emergency currency during this period, and the print quality reflects a competent regional firm working at volume under difficult paper supply conditions.
