Comments

Mitterbach is a small Alpine resort municipality in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similar communities in the early 1920s, it issued its own Notgeld to compensate for the near-total absence of small-denomination coinage following Austria's postwar monetary collapse. The Sommer printing house in St. Pölten was a regional workhorse for such commissions, producing notes for numerous Lower Austrian Gemeinden during this period.

Three signatories — the Bürgermeister, Vicebürgermeister, and a Finanz-Referent — lend this note an unusually formal administrative weight for a village emergency issue.
