The denomination numeral '75' appears in large type in the upper left and upper right corners, flanking the church vignette. Text in Gothic Kurrent script at left gives the issuing authority's guarantee of redemption, while the right panel bears the redemption deadline, a reproduction-prohibition notice, and three facsimile signatures of the Bürgermeister, Vizebürgermeister, and Gemeinderat; the imprint '1. One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced during the severe coin shortage of the First World War and its immediate aftermath, this 75 Heller note from Lofer — a small market town in the Salzburg district of St. Johann — was printed by Wagner in Innsbruck, a firm that handled numerous Tyrolean and Salzburg municipal emergency issues during this period. Local authorities were authorized to issue small-denomination paper to replace hoarded or melted coinage, and towns as minor as Lofer found themselves acting as de facto currency issuers.
The Jaksc/Pick reference JPR0560a indicates this is the first catalogued variety for the Lofer 75 Heller type, suggesting at least one additional variant exists.
