| 正面描述 | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing a diamond diadem and pearl necklace, as sculpted by Dora de Pédery-Hunt. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored proof field. The legend ELIZABETH II flanks the effigy on the left, while D · G · REGINA appears on the right. The date 2002 is inscribed in the lower exergue beneath the portrait. The overall composition is characteristic of the Pédery-Hunt effigy used on Canadian coinage from 1990 onward. |

The Great Blue Heron coin was part of the Royal Canadian Mint's early push into collector platinum — a market it had been developing aggressively since launching its Maple Leaf bullion series in 1988. By 2002, the Mint was producing low-mintage wildlife issues in .9995 fine platinum specifically to capture the high-end numismatic market rather than the bullion trade. Mintages on these pieces were deliberately restricted, typically to the low thousands, to preserve secondary market premiums.
KM#1098 is from the final year of Elizabeth II's third portrait by Dora de Pédery-Hunt on Canadian coinage, before the Susanna Blunt effigy was introduced in 2003.
