The Banco de San Juan was one of several provincial banks operating under Argentina's pre-1890 free banking arrangements, issuing their own notes backed — nominally — by provincial bonds and gold reserves. The 75 centavos denomination is an odd fractional that points directly to practical necessity: coin shortages in the interior provinces were chronic, and small-denomination paper plugged the gap left by the absence of hard currency in daily transactions.
San Juan's remoteness from Buenos Aires made external oversight effectively symbolic. Provincial bank notes often circulated well beyond their nominal backing, and the Banco de San Juan collapsed along with most of its contemporaries in the financial turbulence that preceded the Baring Crisis of 1890.
