Issued to commemorate the opening of the Coppename River bridge, this piece belongs to a broader series of Surinamese commemorative gold issues produced in the late 1990s as the country was still stabilizing following years of military rule, coup attempts, and a civil conflict — the Interior War — that had only formally ended in 1992. Suriname's economy remained fragile, and commemorative coinage of this period was produced largely for export sale rather than domestic circulation, with the gulden itself collapsing in purchasing power before the currency was eventually replaced by the Surinamese dollar in 2004.
