| Descrizione del rovescio | The reverse presents the Jerusalem cross — a large cross potent with a smaller cross in each quadrant — enclosed within a double tressure or ornamental border, consistent with the standard Potosí macuquina type of the period. The cross design, characteristic of the Spanish colonial cob series, occupies the majority of the irregularly shaped flan, with portions of the surrounding legend visible at the edges. The Latin legend records the royal title and the date of striking, identifying this as a product of the Potosí mint during the reign of Philip IV. The field surrounding the cross shows the typical granular texture and uneven relief resulting from the hammered cob production method. The overall design conforms closely to the established iconographic standard for mid-17th century Potosí silver coinage. |

The 7½ reales denomination is one of the stranger products of mid-17th century Spanish colonial monetary policy. Introduced to address a chronic shortage of fractional silver after years of debased vellon coinage had eroded public confidence in the Castilian monetary system, it filled a gap between the 4 and 8 reales without ever achieving broad commercial acceptance. The denomination was short-lived precisely because it solved a problem that merchants had already worked around.
The KM#C19.22 attribution places this among the macuquina (cob) coinage of the colonial mints operating under Philip IV, struck by hand from irregular planchets — a process that made each piece dimensionally unique regardless of nominal weight specification.
