The Ibero-American Capitals series is a joint commemorative program coordinated among the minting authorities of Spain, Portugal, and Latin American nations, each issuing coins tied to a rotating host city. Lisbon's inclusion in the 2024 cycle marks one of the few recent occasions the Casa da Moeda has participated at the copper-nickel circulation-quality tier rather than issuing exclusively in silver or bimetallic formats.
The 7½ euro denomination itself is a Portuguese invention — introduced in 2008 as a face value that sidesteps direct competition with the European Central Bank's regulated denominations while still qualifying as legal tender.
