Portugal's 7½ euro denomination was introduced specifically for collector issues tied to the Discoveries commemorative program — an awkward face value by design, intended to sit outside everyday circulation while remaining legal tender. The Magalhães circumnavigation series began releasing in 2019 to mark the 500th anniversary of the 1519–1522 expedition, though Magellan himself was killed in the Philippines in April 1521 and never completed the voyage; that distinction belongs to Juan Sebastián Elcano, commanding the Victoria.
The .500 fineness is notably lower than most European silver commemoratives, a cost-control measure that kept retail prices accessible for the broader collector market INCM was targeting.
