Joaquim Agostinho finished third in the Tour de France in both 1978 and 1979 — a feat that made him the most successful Portuguese rider in that race's history, a record that still stands. He died in 1984 from injuries sustained when a dog ran onto the road during the Volta ao Algarve, a detail that turned him into something close to a national martyr in Portuguese cycling memory.
