Equatorial Guinea has a long and commercially transparent history of issuing commemorative coinage with no domestic monetary purpose — coins struck for foreign collectors, sold through distributors, and never intended to circulate. This 1993 issue for the 1994 FIFA World Cup is squarely in that tradition. The country had no particular connection to the tournament; the United States was awarded hosting rights by FIFA in 1988, and Equatorial Guinea's national team was not among the qualifiers.
The denomination itself — 7,000 francs CFA — was essentially fictional for practical purposes at issue.
