Aversbeschreibung Armed knight standing facing, head turned to the left, wearing a plumed helmet and full armour, holding a sword upright in the right hand and grasping a bundle of arrows in the left; below, a shield bearing a rampant lion. The figure is rendered in the mannered late-Renaissance style characteristic of north Italian hammered coinage of the period. A beaded inner border frames the design, with the circular Latin legend distributed around the periphery separated by cross and floral stops, incorporating the date 1603.

Reversbeschreibung A large rampant lion passant guardant occupies the central field, facing left with raised forepaw and elaborately detailed mane, set within a beaded inner border. The bold, vigorously modelled leonine figure gives this issue its popular designation Tallero del leone. The circumferential Latin legend, separated by cross and floral stops, reads CONFIDENS DNO NON MOVENTVR, a Scriptural motto signifying that those who trust in the Lord shall not be moved.

Zusätzliche Informationen

The County of Correggio was a tiny imperial fief in what is now Emilia-Romagna, and its minting activity in the late sixteenth century was wildly disproportionate to its political weight. The counts exploited their imperial minting privileges aggressively, producing large silver pieces that circulated well beyond their borders precisely because the leone — the lion type — was a trusted commercial denomination across northern Italy and the Levant trade routes.

The 1595–1603 dating spans the rule of Siro and his brothers under joint lordship, a period of fractious co-governance that ended when the Este of Modena absorbed the county in 1634. CNI IX records only a handful of die combinations for this type.
