Issued to mark the 70th year of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's reign — the longest of any Thai monarch and, at the time, the longest of any living head of state in the world. Bhumibol ascended in 1946 following the sudden death of his brother Ananda Mahidol, whose fatal gunshot wound was never conclusively ruled accidental or otherwise. That unresolved beginning gave way to seven decades of intense personal identification between king and country.
The 70 Baht denomination itself is the telling detail: it exists solely because of this anniversary, with no functional role in everyday commerce.
