Obverse description The obverse displays four large Chinese characters arranged in a cruciform pattern around a central stylized sunflower or rosette motif: 嗣 (upper), 通 (right), 德 (lower), 寶 (left), together reading 嗣德通寶, the reign title and monetary designation of Emperor Tự Đức. The characters are rendered in bold, deeply cast relief in a formal clerical script style. The field between the characters is plain and unadorned, allowing the central floral device to serve as the focal point. The entire design is enclosed within a decorative border of interlocking cloud or scroll motifs, itself surrounded by an outer beaded rim.

Reverse description The reverse features four large Chinese characters in the cardinal positions around a central sunflower rosette, reading 七 (seven, upper right), 日 (right), 錢 (lower), 壹 (left), indicating the denomination of seven tiền. Two confronting dragons in high-relief, finely detailed with scales and claws, occupy the diagonal fields between the characters, flanking the central motif in a dynamic, symmetrical composition characteristic of Nguyễn dynasty imperial coinage. The dragons face the central rosette, symbolizing imperial authority. The design is framed by the same decorative cloud-scroll border and outer beaded rim as the obverse.
