This piece belongs to Poland's long-running "Polish Cities" collector series, which began in 2005 and documented municipalities with particular geographic or historical character. Hel — a narrow sand spit barely 200 meters wide at points — sits at the tip of the Hel Peninsula in the Gulf of Gdańsk, a settlement that spent centuries under alternating Prussian, Free City of Danzig, and Polish jurisdiction before finally becoming part of the Polish state after 1945. The last German garrison in the region surrendered there on May 9, 1945, the final capitulation point on the Baltic front.
