Reverse description The elaborate arms of the City of Riga occupy the central field, depicting the fortified city gate flanked by two rampant lions acting as supporters, the whole surmounted by a cross-tipped finial above the central tower. The design is rendered in fine detail characteristic of early 17th-century Germanic die engraving, with the date MDCXXII appearing in the upper portion of the legend. The engraver's initials M-W for Martin Wulff appear in the lower field flanking the central device. The surrounding circular Latin legend reads continuously around the periphery of the coin.
