Obverse description The central field features the Public Seal of Niue, a circular device depicting a native tree flanked by decorative foliage and enclosed within an ornate border, surmounted by a royal crown. Two crossed ceremonial swords appear below the seal, with a scroll bearing the mottoes ATUA and NIUE TUKULAGI. A chessboard pattern fills the background field, and a group of chess pieces — including king, queen, rook, knight, and bishop — is arranged in relief along the lower portion of the coin. The outer border is decorated with an intricate Celtic knotwork pattern. The legends NIUE ISLAND, 2025, 3 oz, 7 DOLLARS, and Ag 999 are inscribed around the periphery, with the mint mark XXI appearing in the lower left field.

Reverse description A richly detailed high-relief composition depicts two pairs of medieval figures engaged in a chess match across a centrally placed chessboard rendered with selective gold gilding. To the lower left, a crowned and long-bearded king contemplates the board, flanked by an armored warrior brandishing a sword; to the lower right, a turbaned sage holds a smoking pipe in deep concentration, accompanied by elaborately attired attendants. Along the upper register, busts of a crowned queen and a noblewoman face one another across a stylized castle cityscape, with a small gold-tinted orb at the apex. The chessboard displays an active King's Gambit opening position, with column coordinates c, d, e, f, and g and row numerals 3, 6, 7, and 8 engraved along the edges. A scroll at the base of the coin bears the legend KING'S GAMBIT in raised lettering.
