| Opis awersu | The obverse presents a traditional Nepalese royal mandala design arranged within a geometric cross-shaped frame, divided into quadrants by a central medallion bearing the trishula (trident), a sacred symbol of Shiva. The royal name of King Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev is inscribed in Devanagari script distributed across the quadrants of the central panel, with the honorific "Shree Shree" appearing in the upper arc. Auspicious royal symbols occupy the four outer cartouches, including a sun, a lotus blossom, a royal fly-whisk, and a ceremonial ewer. The Bikram Sambat date 2060 is inscribed in Nepali numerals at the base of the design. The entire composition is enclosed within a beaded border, reflecting the classical style of Nepalese numismatic art. |

Nepal's 2003 Asarphi gold issues were produced under Gyanendra Shah, who had assumed the throne in controversial circumstances following the 2001 royal massacre that killed King Birendra and eight other members of the royal family. Gyanendra's reign was politically turbulent from the start, running parallel to an intensifying Maoist insurgency that had been grinding through the country since 1996.
