Turkey's wildlife conservation coinage program of the late 1990s and early 2000s produced a number of high-denomination silver issues aimed squarely at the international collector market — the face value in inflated Turkish lira was functionally meaningless at the time of issue, with 7.5 million lira worth only a few US dollars amid the chronic inflation that preceded the 2001 economic crisis and the currency redenomination that followed in 2005.
The marbled duck, Marmaronetta angustirostris, breeds in scattered wetland pockets across Anatolia, making it a defensible choice for a Turkish nature series.
