Turkey hosted the 34th Chess Olympiad in Istanbul in 2000, one of the largest team chess tournaments ever held, with over 130 nations competing. The Darphane issued this commemorative as part of a broader run of silver pieces tied to the event, a practice the mint had been expanding through the 1990s as collector-market revenue became an increasingly deliberate part of its output strategy.
The denomination — 7,500,000 lira — reflects the chronic inflation that had been eroding Turkish currency since the 1970s, reaching its most absurd expression just before the 2005 redenomination dropped six zeroes from the lira entirely.
