Reverse description Central Portuguese royal coat of arms of the first type, comprising the inescutcheon of five bezants arranged in cross pattern on a plain shield, bordered by the five castles of the kingdom, all set within an ornate Baroque cartouche supported by elaborate foliate scrollwork and acanthus-leaf mantling. A lion mask appears at the top center of the cartouche, and the entire composition is surmounted by the royal crown. A decorative floral garland frames the lower portion of the shield. The peripheral Latin legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES and the denomination 6400 appear in the field.
