| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing five escutcheons in cross formation, each charged with five bezants, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles — surmounted by a royal crown of pronounced arched form. The denomination 640 and the date of issue are positioned to the left of the shield within the legend. Three heraldic roses, arranged vertically, appear to the right of the shield in the field. The circumferential legend, rendered in Roman capitals, reads PETRVS·II·DG·PORT·REX·ET·BRAS·D, identifying Pedro II as King of Portugal and Lord of Brazil, and runs along the toothed border. |

| Reverse description | Central device consists of a large armillary sphere rendered in bold relief, its intersecting rings depicting meridians, parallels, and the ecliptic, topped and bottomed by decorative pole finials. Superimposed diagonally across the sphere are the arms of the Order of Christ cross, its distinctive pattée form clearly articulated. The circumferential legend SVBQ. SIGN. NATA STAB., meaning 'Born under a steady sign,' encircles the design in Roman capitals along the toothed border, referencing the Portuguese royal motto of celestial guidance. |
