The designation "Terra de Santa Cruz" — Land of the Holy Cross — was the original Portuguese name for Brazil, used briefly after Cabral's landfall in 1500 before commercial realities reasserted themselves and the land was renamed after the brazilwood trade that actually paid the bills. Its appearance on a 1695 pattern coin is a deliberate archaism, invoking apostolic authority over the colony rather than its commodity value. That the Casa da Moeda de Lisboa produced this as a pattern, never advancing to circulation, suggests the design was rejected — possibly because the iconographic program was considered too ecclesiastical for a working colonial currency.
