The Bahia mint — Casa da Moeda da Bahia — was reestablished in 1694 specifically to serve this purpose, making this piece among the earliest products of that reconstituted facility. Colonial minting at Bahia had been intermittent and politically contested; Portuguese authorities had repeatedly shuttered and reopened the mint in response to smuggling pressures and crown revenue concerns.
