The denomination '640' appears to the left of the shield and the mint date to the right, flanking the arms. A circular Latin legend surrounds the entire design, reading JOSEPHUS. I. D. G. PORT. REX. The circular Latin legend SUBQ. SIGN. NATA. STAB. (Born under a steady sign) runs around the periphery of the field. A finely beaded border frames the entire reverse design. The overall composition is bold and deeply struck, characteristic of the milled coinage produced at the Lisbon Mint during the reign of José I. |
