João VI fled Lisbon for Rio de Janeiro in 1807 ahead of Napoleon's invasion, and the transfer of the Portuguese court to Brazil forced an immediate rethinking of colonial monetary infrastructure. The Casa da Moeda do Brasil was elevated almost overnight from a peripheral operation to the effective mint of a functioning monarchy in exile. This 640 réis denomination was among the first emissions to reflect that new political reality, struck under the title of Prince Regent before João formally assumed the kingship in 1816 following his mother Maria I's death.
The .917 fine silver content places these squarely in the tradition of Portuguese colonial coinage, though striking quality varies considerably across the issue's seven-year run.
