| Obverse description | The central field features the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the quinas of Portugal and the castles of Castile, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown — set within a toothed border. The date is split across the shield, with the first two digits to the left and the last two to the right. The circular legend reading JOANNES·D·G·PORT·P·REGENS·ET·BRASD runs around the periphery, interrupted by the crown at top, with the denomination 640 incorporated into the design flanking the shield. |
