Haiti's 1846 coinage was struck under President Philippe Guerrier's successor, Louis Pierrot, during a period of chronic fiscal instability following the 1825 indemnity agreement with France — the ruinous 150-million-franc debt Haiti accepted in exchange for diplomatic recognition. Copper fractional issues of this era circulated heavily in a cash-starved economy where hard money of any denomination was genuinely scarce.
KM#29 is frequently encountered with significant corrosion, a direct consequence of Haiti's humid coastal environment and the low-quality copper alloys sourced during this period.
