Issued to mark the centenary of a specific royal act: in 1903, King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) made his second grand tour of Europe, the first reigning Siamese monarch to travel abroad twice. The journey was partly diplomatic calculation — Siam was navigating aggressive French and British colonial pressure on its borders, and a personal royal presence in European courts carried weight that no ambassador could replicate. Rama IX's government regularly commissioned commemorative silver issues anchoring his reign to Chulalongkorn's modernizing legacy, a dynastic continuity project that ran through dozens of issues across the 1990s and early 2000s.
