Issued to mark the Rajamangala ceremony of 1988, in which Bhumibol Adulyadej formally received the Royal Regalia and was recognized under Buddhist tradition as having reached a spiritually auspicious threshold — completion of his seventh twelve-year cycle, or 84th year in the lunar reckoning. The ceremony itself drew an estimated crowd of several hundred thousand to Bangkok's Sanam Luang, one of the largest public gatherings in modern Thai history.
The .925 silver specification placed this issue above many contemporary Thai commemoratives, which frequently used lower-grade alloys.
