Issued in 1981 to mark the centennial of Rama IX's reign — more precisely, the 100th anniversary of the birth of King Vajiravudh, Rama VI — this coin commemorates a monarch who studied at Sandhurst and Oxford and introduced Western-style nationalism to Thailand, coining the phrase "Nation, Religion, King" that remains the country's unofficial motto. Vajiravudh ruled from 1910 until his death in 1925 and left no male heir, a dynastic crisis that forced the succession to pass to his younger brother Prajadhipok.
