The tanga denomination was a holdover from the pre-conquest monetary system of Goa, retained by the Portuguese precisely because local merchants refused to abandon it. Pedro V's brief reign — he died of cholera in 1861 at twenty-four — produced relatively few colonial issues, and the Goa mint was operating under chronic supply constraints throughout the 1850s, which accounts for the compressed four-year window of this type despite no official discontinuation order.
