Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned 'G.P.' countermark of King Luís I of Portugal, applied in 1887, prominently struck into the center of the host coin's field. The crowned monogram, consisting of the letters 'G.P.' surmounted by a royal crown, appears in relief within an incuse punch impression. The underlying host coin—a Spanish Colonial half real of Carlos III struck at the Mexico City Mint—is partially visible beneath and around the countermark. Remnants of the original host coin's design, including the partial crowned globe motif, are discernible in the surrounding field. The outer legend of the host coin, reading 'CAROLUS·III· DEI.GRATIA', runs along the periphery of the coin.
