Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms within an ornate cartouche, surrounded by a decorative wreath of laurel or floral branches. The shield displays the traditional Portuguese escutcheon with quinas and castles. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded or rope inner border, with a further outer border of fine pellets or rope-work following the coin's round flan. The overall style reflects the crude hammered technique characteristic of colonial Goa mint issues of the early nineteenth century.
