| Obverse description | Hammered silver flan bearing the applied countermark of João IV's monetary reform of 1642, consisting of the numerals '60' punched prominently in the field, denoting the new tariffed value of 60 Réis. The countermark is struck over the design of the host coin, which varies according to subtype and may originate from multiple earlier Portuguese reigns. The irregular flan shows characteristic hammerwork surfaces with evident wear and scratching consistent with extensive circulation prior to countermarking. |
