| Obverse description | At center, the quartered arms of the Bishopric of Passau surmounted by a half-length figure of Saint Stephen, the patron saint of Passau, facing front and holding stones in his left hand, his nimbus visible above his head. The mintmark initials S·S· appear to either side of the shield. The encircling Latin legend reads VRBANVS·D·G·EPS·PATAVIEN with the date 1569 incorporated into the field, all rendered in the late Renaissance hammered style characteristic of German ecclesiastical coinage. |
