Lothar Friedrich von Metternich-Burscheid became Archbishop-Elector of Mainz in 1673, and his tenure coincided with the broader monetary chaos following the Kipper und Wipperzeit's long aftermath and the ongoing pressures of Louis XIV's Rhine campaigns. The 60 Kreuzer denomination — a large silver piece intended for substantial transactions — was characteristic of the ecclesiastical electorates asserting monetary authority during fragile interregnums of imperial enforcement.
Mainz, as one of the three ecclesiastical electors, retained the right to strike coinage under the Golden Bull of 1356. Lothar Friedrich's reign lasted only until 1675, making this a short-window issue.
