The eagle is rendered in the bold, stylized tradition of mid-16th century Germanic coinage. The surrounding legend, MAXIMILIAN II D G ROM IMP SEMP AVG, invokes the authority of Emperor Maximilian II, under whose suzerainty this coin was issued.
